Which broadband provider is fastest in Escrick?
The question of which company provides the fastest broadband in Escrick arises from time to time.
Most of the village has a choice of three networks:
Openreach provide internet using "Fibre to the Cabinet" (FTTC / SoGEA) technology - usually sold as fibre broadband 'up to 38mbps' or 'up to 76mbps' packages. This is available to almost all premises in Escrick.
Openreach do not sell their services directly, but you buy from one of many resellers such as BT, EE, Plusnet, Sky, TalkTalk, Zen, etc
Fibre broadband is provided from one of three cabinets. The village is served by a cabinet located outside the exchange (cabinet 3), and the Menagerie and business park each have their own cabinets (cabinets 2 & 4).
"FTTC" broadband speeds are dependent on the distance from the cabinet. Dower Chase and other areas near the exchange achieve the full 80mbps; The Glade/Carrs Meadow/Escrick Park Gardens get around 40mbps.

Technology: SoGEA/FTTC - this uses copper wires from the cabinet to deliver internet access. The copper service typically offers asymmetric speeds, with upload speeds around 20% of download speeds.
Features: The features available will depend upon which reseller you buy your service from.
Quickline were the chosen supplier in this area for the Government's "Project Gigabit" initiative.
They provide internet services using fibre connections all the way to the home. This is currently available for most premises in the village, but not all outlying properties. They offer connections between 100mbps and 1000mbps.
Unlike Openreach, Quickline sell their services directly, and do not currently support resellers on their network. If you want a connection from them, you need to buy it directly from them: www.quickline.co.uk.
Connections are provided from Quickline's cabinet in Deighton.
Technology: Full fibre. This uses fibre optic cable all the way to the premises. Specifically Quickline uses XGS-PON passive fibre technology. This is a modern standard that supports symmetric speeds up to 10Gbps. For residential connections, Quickline uses CGNAT over IPv4, but static IP addresses are available where there is a technical need, and as standard on business connections.
Features: Quickline only provide internet access. If you require a landline phone, you will need to buy this separately.
Unusually, Escrick has a choice of full fibre providers. Fusion Fibre have also built a fibre network in part of the village. At the time of writing (June 2024) they were still in the process of completing the network. They provide internet services using fibre connections all the way to the home. They offer connections between 70mbps and 900mbps.
Unlike Openreach, Fusion Fibresell their services directly, and do not currently have resellers on their network. If you want a connection from them, you need to buy it directly from them: fusionfibregroup.co.uk.
Connections are provided from Fusion Fibre's cabinet in on the A19, opposite the telephone exchange. The service is not available in all streets, notably excluding Wenlock Drive.
Technology: Full fibre. This uses fibre optic cable all the way to the premises. Specifically Fusion Fibre uses XGS-PON passive fibre technology. This is a modern standard that supports symmetric speeds up to 10Gbps. Fusion Fibre offer static IP addresses for £5 per month on residential connections, and as standard on business connections.
Features: Fusion Fibre provide both internet access and landline phones (using "Voice over IP" technology)
