NB: Public rights of way are a statutory right that must be made accessible by the landowner. Permissive rights of way are where the landowner has at their discretion made a footpath/bridleway accessible. Permissive rights of way may have restrictions upon dates/time of use; people that can use them; or may be revoked by the landowner at their sole discretion. Parts of Skipwith Common are open access land.
The route uses the trackbed of the old East Coast Mainline railway, which was bought by Sustrans for £1 in the 1980s and turned into one of its very first traffic-free paths.
