The Escrick 10k Committee have been advised by Charlie Forbes Adam the 10k will not take place next year on Escrick Park Estate. The route of the run is through Queen Margaret’s School, along the permissive right of way around the Temple and then into Hollicarrs Wood , all of which is private land . A small group of Escrick residents have submitted an application to make the first part of this route a public right of way and this has resulted in an enquiry being conducted by North Yorkshire County Council into the validity of the claim.
The Escrick Park Estate have been advised by their solicitors that it would not be appropriate to permit public events along the disputed route and beyond whilst this process is underway. We have considered alternative routes but none are practical, so we have no choice but to cancel the event for 2014.
Charlie has assured me that they will reconsider their position when the circumstances change, and it may yet be possible to run the 2014 event if the Right of Way matter is resolved soon, as the opening date for applications is not until 1st March 2014 . Clearly, this is a severe blow to the finances of the Escrick Playing Fields Association for which this is the sole fundraiser, and to the Escrick Village Green Committee who run the BBQ on the day. The Escrick 10k has become an established part of the running calendar in our area and attracts 600 runners, their families and friends from across Yorkshire and beyond. The 10k Committee hope that the event can be re-instated as soon as possible.
